An Elemental Story

An Elemental Story

Mono-printing with leaves

The theme in this term’s Experimental Drawing & Painting course has been ‘Objects and Elements of Nature’, perfect for the Summer term as we can work outside in the garden, drawing directly from the plants and environment. The emphasis in this course is on becoming engaged in and enjoying the process, and being curious and experimental, rather than focusing on the outcome or trying to create a ‘good’ drawing. Each session starts with a short mindfulness meditation. We’ve explored a lot of different things this term: drawing from observation using a wide range of conventional and non-conventional materials and approaches, including taking mono-printing plates out in to the garden; painting imaginatively in response to the elements using clay and pigment for earth, watercolour and ink for water, bubbles for air, and charcoal and wax for fire; exploring elements of composition using collage; using ideas from the drawings & paintings to create a collagraph print; creating a collage book titled ‘an elemental story’ and also working collaboratively on shared paintings. It’s been a lot of fun and, paradoxically, by focusing on the process rather than the result, some really beautiful pieces have been produced. The course runs on Monday and Friday mornings every term at Paddock Art Studios. See calendar for more details. For regular images from the class follow me on instagram @mindfully.creative
